Introduction To Fly Fishing

Learn the basics of fly fishing techniques and equipment and where to fly fish in the Mid-Atlantic region. The class will meet every other Thursday (3/2, 3/16, 3/30, 4/13, 4/27) from 5 to 8:00 p.m. in Science Hall, Room 120.

This introductory course incorporates both classroom sessions and hands-on instruction in casting and fishing techniques and situations. Students will learn about equipment, knot tying, entomology (the bugs fish eat), reading the water, and on-stream tactics. Demonstrations in fly tying and rod building will also be given in classroom sessions. All necessary equipment will be provided by course instructors.

The class will be taught by local-guide Charlie Laffey, a Westernport native who knows the Savage River watershed and the many Brook Trout streams better than anyone, and Tom Sydow, a full-time professor at PSC. For more information regarding this class, please contact course instructor Tom Sydow at or 304-788-6996.
